HATHA YOGA CLEANSING PRACTICES
HATHA YOGA CLEANSING PRACTICES
The hatha yogic science includes certain cleansing processes as an essential part of yoga sadhana. In fact, they are considered a prerequisite to asana and pranayama in the classical system. These are called shatkarma, or ‘six purificatory techniques’. The shatkarma are extremely beneficial for physical and mental health, helping to heal various internal disorders. Their regular practice also optimizes the benefits of your current yoga sadhana and allows you to become ready for higher practices.
Laghoo Shankhaprakshalana is one of the most effective ways to reset the entire body. ‘Shankha’ means conch, referring here to the abdominal region, and ‘prakshalana’ means cleaning out. It is also known as varisara dhauti.
There are two versions of shankhaprakshalana: short (or laghoo) shankhaprakshalana and full (or poorna) shankhaprakshalana. The practice cleans the entire 15 feet of intestines and accumulated matter stuck here from days, weeks, years, or one’s whole lifetime!
Benefits
It is highly recommended for chronic constipation, gas, acidity, indigestion, and other digestive ailments. It is also beneficial for the urinary system, preventing infection and kidney stones. The practice requires one to drink a specific amount of lukewarm saline water and then practise certain asanas, repeating the sequence for a specified number of times. This results in bowel movements that clear out the system
Kunjal is a Sanskrit word that means ‘sour gruel’. Kunjal kriya is also known as vamana dhauti (regurgitative cleansing), and is a technique for cleansing the stomach.
Benefits
It is helpful for gas, acidity, indigestion, nausea, respiratory problems, headaches, anxiety, lethargy, apathy, etc. The practice requires one to quickly drink lukewarm saline water and then regurgitate it, which cleans out the stomach and also helps the respiratory system.
Neti cleans the sinus tract. The practice requires the usage of a neti pot with which one cleans the nasal cavities using lukewarm saline water.
Benefits
Neti has a positive influence on all sense organs located in the head region. It strengthens the vision, relieves tired eyes and headaches, and improves memory and concentration. It is also beneficial for problems associated with the nasal and sinus cavities, including allergies. Neti has a preventative effect against head colds and sinusitis.
