Pranayama

Most of us take our respiratory process for granted, never considering that perhaps there is a correct and an incorrect way of breathing naturally. We tend to breathe incorrectly and inadequately because our lives are not balanced. The stresses and strains, conflicts and challenges of life adversely affect and alter the basic rhythm of breath. Often, the breath becomes fast and shallow. Incorrect or inadequate breathing means using only a part of the capacity of the lungs and starving the body of precious oxygen nourishment which is freely available to us. By shallow breathing, we also build up stagnant air in the lower regions of the lungs leading to various respiratory disorders.

Without breathing, we cannot live. By half breathing, we only half live. Let us rectify this undesirable situation by re-educating our breath in the yogic way. Pranayama is a science which is related to the breath but more so to the subtle energies flowing in the breath, which is known as prana. Prana exists within each of us in a dormant form. When we practice pranayama, the quantity of this vital energy in the body is activated to a higher frequency, gearing us towards maintaining a healthy body and mind.

In the Yoga Sutras, the practices of pranayama and asana are considered to be the highest form of purification and self-discipline for the body and mind.

In this Yoga Anubhava series, we will work on a specific program to strengthen and revitalize the lungs with pranayama, which will also help to face the challenges of life more effectively and confidently.
