Yoga Anubhava Series - Pranayama

Pranayama (A science beyond breath)

In the Yoga Sutras, the practices of pranayama and asana are considered to be the highest form of purification and self discipline for the body and mind.

Pranayama is a science related to our breath, but more so to the subtle energy flowing in the breath, which is known as 'prana'.  Prana exists within each one of us, though much of it lies dormant. When we practice pranayama, this vital energy in the body is activated to a higher frequency, leading to a healthier body and mind.

The science of  Pranayama says that disease is a manifestation of an imbalance in the flow of prana. We may suffer from physical, mental and emotional ailments when prana is lacking in the body. If prana does not find sufficient room in the body, there can be only one reason: it is being forced out by something that does not really belong there, such as toxic blockages. When we practice pranayama, we try to reduce these blockages and replace them with more and more prana within the body, resulting in balance and harmony within and outside as well.

At the Physical level, the practices of pranayama help in controlling and alleviating conditions such as high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis, rheumatism, bronchitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, cholesterol, fat, headaches, sinusitis, and various other ailments caused due to shallow breathing. At the spiritual level, the practices are said to be a direct link to our higher consciousness, or Paramatma.

Let us try to understand and experience this invaluable science discovered by ancient yogis thousands of years ago through their higher intuition and haded to us by our Guru Parampara.
