YOGA ANUBHAVA SERIES

LIKHITA JAPA

Likhita japa is an enjoyable and practical way to practise meditation. Those who practise other forms of meditation often complain of distractions. However, the likhita japa meditation has no such limitations. It takes the practitioner to a deeper level than you can otherwise go. It calls the quality or energy of the Divine into you, and thus into the world.

—Swami Sivananda Saraswati

Likhita japa is the practice of repeatedly writing a mantra. The seemingly simple practice has profound effects on the mind and emotions. The slow and careful writing of the mantra, enhanced by its silent repetition and invocation of its divine attributes very quickly shifts the state of awareness and creates positive emotions such as trust, gratitude and admiration. As the hands and the organ of sight are active in likhita japa, the practice easily and efficiently develops power of concentration.

There are three ways to repeat a mantra: mental repetition (repeating the mantra mentally in silence), verbal repetition (repeating the mantra aloud), likhita japa (writing the mantra). Of all the methods, the scriptures say that likhita japa is the most effective.

During the Yoga Anubhava series, we will learn the correct way to practise likhita japa and the factors that make the practice more effective, and receive the experience of the practice itself. Each day will consist of:

        • Kaya sthairyam

        • Likhita Japa practice
