Yoga during Menopause

(A YOGA FOR WELLNESS SERIES)

Menopause is a physiological process that signifies the beginning of a new phase in women's life. However, as with any change, it comes with shifts at the physical, mental and emotional and pranic levels. One has to also contend with societal and cultural nuances of the event, such as measuring of a women's worth in terms of her reproductive ability and the lack of wrinkles. All these factors make this period of transition difficult for many women.

It is possible to sail through the passage of menopause with dignity, grace and a positive outlook when you adopt the yogic way of living. In fact, anecdotal evidence suggests that regular yoga practitioners' experience of menopausal syndrome tends to be mild and they are able to traverse this period with greater ease.

Specific yogic practices of asana, pranayama, mudra and bandha help to adjust with the changing chemical balance when the body produces smaller and smaller quantities of reproductive hormones. As a result, symptoms such as hot flushes, weight gain, headaches, digestive upset, dizziness, palpitations, blood pressure irregularities, insomnia, depression, etc. are alleviated. Relaxation practices such as yoga nidra relieve stress at all levels. Meditation, mantra chanting and other such practices elevate the mind and emotions, and allow one to see the period of change in a wider perspective. Slowly building up a yogic lifestyle with regularity in the daily activities of food and sleep and incorporating little positive habits throughout the day further help to keep you fit and upbeat. Overall, you are able to let go of the past and welcome the freedom and the joy of starting a new chapter in your life.
